Youth Livestock Safety
Livestock represent a major source of injury to children, accounting for at least one in five non-fatal injuries to children every year. Youth who show livestock generally spend a great deal of time with their animals, and therefore may be at greater risk of injury. The information here is designed for use by youth who raise and show livestock competitively and the adult advisers who guide them. Injury prevention and awareness of livestock-related injuries are our goals.
For purposes of this project, livestock includes beef, dairy, horse, sheep, goat, and swine.
On this page are links to safety quizzes and printable lessons related to each of the species listed above. These materials can be used alone or as part of a more comprehensive livestock safety program using printed safety lessons and/or video safety lessons.
We also include guidance and resources for helping young people with disabilities safely participate in livestock project activities.
